This thesis focuses on the study of cognitive, communicative and pragmatic aspects to express a character’s psychological and emotional state of solitude in French postmodernist prose. A methodology for a complex analysis of this phenomenon has been elaborated. The research describes the expression of character’s solitude through the prism of conceptual metaphor models, elucidating the role of open and closed conceptual spaces in depicting character’s psychological and emotional states. The pragmatic aspect pertaining to the character’s state of solitude is interpreted in the light of the intertextuality theory. Gender-related specificity of speech characterization of a lonely personage’s communicative space has been revealed.
