Essay

The thesis aims at providing a comprehensive analysis and classification of the transformations which predicates undergo in the process of translation from English into Ukrainian. A predicate transformation in texts of Ukrainian translations is a lexical and/or grammatical transformation in the case of impossibility to use direct correspondence for preserving the communicative effect of the source text and in compliance with the target language norms. The following types and kinds of predicate transformations are identified: a) lexico-semantic transformations in which a contextual change of the predicate is necessary in the form of generalization or concretization of the predicate meaning; b) morphological predicate transformations in which the categorical substitution of the predicate or the change of its meaning is presupposed (substituting a passive form of the verb-predicate by its active form and vice verse), morphological predicate transformations, when only a grammatical category of the English verb-predicate is changed; c) lexico-grammatical predicate transformations. Considered also are intracategorial and intercategorial predicate transformations with respect to the categories of time, aspect, voice. The reasons and conditions of predicate transformations are analyzed. A frequency analysis of predicate transformations was conducted for identifying their patterns of use during translation depending on stylistic and genre features of texts.
