Essay

The thesis presents a comprehensive study of discourse markers functioning in the English and American prose and drama throughout different time periods compared with their correspondences in Ukrainian translations. Discourse markers are defined as high-frequency functional lexemes found in dialogues and characterized by the gradation of pragmatic meaning: from "speech shifts" to implication of various connotations actualized only in the context, thus often challenging the translator to render their implied meanings into the Ukrainian language. The research intends to analyze pragmatic factors that influence the translator's decisions in rendering discourse markers into Ukrainian. Factors causing variable translation of discourse markers are divided into three groups that determined the structure of the research empirical part.
