Object - training of students in higher technical education institutions of Ukraine; aim - to systematize theoretical ideas and generalize the experience of professional interest forming in students of higher technical education institutions of Ukraine in the second half of XX century in order to improve the training process of prospective engineers in the course of present day higher technical education reforming; methods - historical, general scientific, prognostic; novelty - the research is the first to substantiate the stages in the development of theory of professional interest forming in students of higher technical education institutions; the scholars' ideas on the professional interest forming problem have been systematized; the practical experience of professional interest forming in students of higher technical education institutions of Ukraine of the period under research has been generalized. The forms and methods facilitating the process of professional interest forming in prospective engineers have been specified. The educational opportunities offered in higher technical education institutions as a favourable environment for professional interest forming have been revealed; results - the research has revived the pedagogical ideas of the past that are relevant for the solution of the problem of research; the dissertation facilitates the comprehensive study of the specific features in the analysis of the problem of professional interest forming in students of higher technical education institutions of the period under research. Theoretical ideas, conclusions, factual historical-theoretical data can be used for preparing lectures, seminars, practical (laboratory) classes on general technical and special disciplines as well as for the organization of professionally-oriented students' scientific work and practice in higher technical education institutions and during teaching "History of Pedagogy" and "Pedagogy", for preparing students' course, diploma, master degree papers; field - pedagogy.
