Object: civic education in the universities of the USA as social and educational phenomenon; goal: is to reveal creative achievements and pedagogical experience of civic education of studying youth in the universities of the USA for the improvement of the process of civic education in the higher educational establishments of Ukraine; methods: historiographical analysis, interpretational and analytical, historical and pedagogical, constructive and genetic, theoretical and generalizing, the method of learning the experience; novelty: for the first time in the pedagogical science of our country the integral analysis of theory and practice of civic education of studying youth in the universities of the USA is carried out, the premises are revealed, the periods of formation and development of civic education of studying youth in the universities of the USA are given scientific grounding; the specificity, content, forms, methods of civic education of studying youth in the universities of the USA are shown and described; the ideas of leading american pedagogues and the experience of civic education of studying youth in the universities of the USA are actualized; clarified: the essence of the concept "civic education of studying youth", the typology of higher educational establishments in the USA; the goal, content, forms, methods of civic education of studying youth in the universities of the USA; results: the obtained data of the thesis is used in the process of teaching of "History of pedagogical science", "Theory and methods of upbringing work", "System of upbringing work in the higher educational establishment", for preparing the seminar for the teachers of higher educational establishments on the problem of civic education; the methodogical recommendations as to civic education of studying youth in the universities for teachers and students of humanitarian faculties are made up; into the scientific usage little known documents, facts concerning the activity of the universities of the USA, their role in the civic education of studying youth are introduced; field of study: general pedagogics and the history of pedagogics.
