Essay

This thesis focuses on the analysis of genesis, semantics and pragmatics of the Oblique mood forms in French and Spanish belles-lettres and legislative discourses viewed diachronically. The research is grounded on the polyphonic theory of Maria Luisa Donaire. The paper contains correlation between the Ukrainian term ''subiektyvnyi sposib'' and French and Spanish "subjunctive" moods within the framework of the development of semantic theory in the XIXth-XXth centuries. Genesis, morphology and specifics of functioning of the most frequent French and Spanish subjunctive forms of IXth-XVIIIth centuries have been singled out. The thesis lays special emphasis upon their present-day functioning in belles-lettres discourse. The dominant word-selectors of the Subjunctive mood forms in principal and subordinate clauses of both Romance languages have been distinguished. Verbs used in the Indicative mood forms of the principal clauses, negative particles, adverbs and conjunctions have been attributed for the analysis. The work treats the use of French and Spanish subjunctive forms in proverbs and sayings.
