Essay

This thesis offers an insight into the essence of translatability problems arising in the process of achieving the adequate rendering of the English experimental poetry from the mid 20th to 21st century into the Ukrainian language. The research investigates various kinds of problems arising in the process of translation on both syntactic and lexical levels of text realization of such trends of the English experimental poetry of the mid 20th - 21st centuries, as the English concrete poetry of the 1950s-60s, the American L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poetry of the 20th - 21st centuries and the four schools belonging to the American experimental poetry of the 20th century. The thesis challenges a view that translation of such poetry is impossible and investigates the limits of translatability of the English experimental poetry into the Ukrainian language. It also considers the problem of comprehension of the poet's world by means of translation, providing a detailed study of various contexts of the original and translation. Besides this the thesis examines the main characteristic traits of all the three poetic trends belonging to the English experimental poetry of the mid 20th - 21st centuries, defining the main aspects of the structural and syntactic nature of this poetry, which give way to the problems, arising in the process of its translation into the Ukrainian language, and highlighting the most vivid difficulties in the process of translation connected with the specific lexical and stylistic peculiarities of the English concrete, American L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E and American experimental poetries. Thus it sums up and explores various methods and ways of translating different lexical, grammatical and structural units, peculiar to the above mentioned kinds of poetry, used by the Ukrainian translators. As a result, the thesis formulates a number of rules and demands that should be followed in the process of rendering such kind of poetry into the Ukrainian language, in order to provide an adequate, faithful and correct version of its translation. By means of practical analysis this dissertation distinguishes the main structural, lexical, grammatical and syntactic units, which cause the greatest difficulties in the process of translating the English experimental poetry into the Ukrainian language, and it finds out that there are no special rules that would in any case provide an adequate and faithful translation. In the process of investigation a conclusion was drawn that in order to preserve the aesthetic and pragmatic nature of the various poetic trends comprising the English experimental poetry, Ukrainian translator should possess substantial and deep knowledge of the both languages, he/she should have a subtle perception of grammatical and syntactical correlations, existing between various constructions in a poetic line, and what is really desirable is that he/she intrinsically feels which method of translation would satisfy all the demands of adequate translation in each particular case. As a result of the investigation three new approaches to the translation of the various poetic trends comprising the English experimental poetry have been formulated and brought into life. They are: synergic approach to the translation of the English concrete poetry of the 1950s - 1960s, antinarrative free-associative holistic approach to the translation of the American L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poetry and power-centric association-holistic literalism as a special approach to the translation of the four schools belonging to the American experimental poetry. Key words: translatability, experimental poetry, open text, interpretation, antireferentiality, metatextuality, synergy.
