Object of study - development of professional educational periodicals in the 1937-1991; subject of study - problems of mental training on the pages of leading educational magazine "Soviet pedagogy" in 1937-1991; purpose of the study - identify and summarize on the basis of retrospective analysis of holistic professional publications the main issues of mental training, which were reflected on the pages of the magazine "Soviet pedagogy" (1937-1991); objectives of the study are solved by using complex general and pedagogical methods: system-research method (for detection, theoretical analysis and systematization of historical-pedagogical works and pedagogical periodicals materials on the studies problem); historical method (for analyzing the content and singularity of solving problems of mental education on the pages of the magazine "Soviet pedagogy" (1937-1991); comparative method (for comparing events, phenomena and facts recorded in the magazine, including the views of domestic and foreign theorists and practitioners on the problems of mental education); the scientific novelty of the study consists in: for the first time identified and summarized main areas of mental education on the basis of a retrospective analysis of a holistic professional publications on the pages of the magazine "Soviet pedagogy" in 1937-1991 (the problem of mental education in the context of the development of ideas on the overall harmonious development of the personality, holistic approach to mental education of the personality on the pages the magazine "Soviet pedagogy", the problem of intellectual development of the personality as the basis of mental education on the pages of the magazine "Soviet pedagogy", stimulating cognitive activity and independence as an effective way of mental education, teaching thought and mental problems of education on the pages of the magazine "Soviet pedagogy"; foreign experience of mental education on the pages of the educational magazine "Soviet pedagogy"); concretized stages in the history of the development and establishment of the magazine "Soviet pedagogy" (1937-1991) according to the status and the jurisdiction; clarified some facts from the history of the leading educational magazine in the context of the development of Soviet pedagogy; was further developed justification the pedagogical value of periodicals as an important source of historical-pedagogical studies, as a means of forecasting the development of pedagogical science.
