Essay

The thesis is dedicated to the substantiation of theoretical approaches to ways of achieving equivalence in translation of conventions. A new practical model of conventions' translation was developed. The topicality of the research is determined by the increasing number of academic papers focusing on the notions of equivalence and adequacy of translation. Moreover, it is determined by the necessity of the accurate regulation of international relations under the conditions of globalization and the need to create theoretical and methodical, practical knowledge bases to polish the official translations of the international conventions' texts. Based on the research of equivalence genesis in the context of translation analysis, theories of equivalence existing in translation studies are systematized. It gives us a possibility to depict their advantages and disadvantages. It is proved that the hierarchical model of equivalence applied to the translation of conventions envisages the singling out of a number of consecutive textual levels and ensures the achievement of a high degree of correspondence of the source and target texts at the maximum number of levels possible. The correlation of translation studies categories "equivalence" and "adequacy" is developed in the context of conventions' translation. The author's definition of equivalence is suggested as the prerequisite of the adequate translation of conventions' texts as far as it allows reaching equipotency of the target text related to the source text in terms of the maximum number of the text characteristics.
