Essay

The thesis sets out to provide a comprehensive description of lip-synch-equivalent as a unit of lip-synch-translation in dubbing of American animation cartoons into Ukrainian. For the first time in Ukrainian translation studies a thorough description of the animation cinema text as a creolized and a literary type of text is presented. The thesis proposes strategies and substrategies of picking out lip-synch-equivalents while performing pre-translation and translation stages in dubbing of animation cartoons. Comparative translation analysis of English and Ukrainian cues reveals techniques and methods of lip-synch-equivalents picking out and criteria for the adequate lip-synch-translation. The thesis also establishes recommendations about picking out lip-synch-equivalents while dubbing American animation cartoons into Ukrainian.
