Essay

The dissertation studies modern techniques of translation of the verb “ufistemi” as a core unit in the Ancient Greek Trinitarian terminology of the 4th century. A thorough aspectual comparative analysis applied to the translated Trinitarian terminology, used in the same texts of different modern languages, demonstrates the dependency of its interpretation on the original texts. Faithfulness of translation is often motivated by the level of confessional style development in the literary languages of the translated texts. Some examples of translation inadequacies are distinguished and the notions of “untranslatability” and “adaptation” of the Ancient Greek Trinitarian terms in the Ukrainian language are shown in the research. All cases of Trinitarian terms translation are mainly classified under four groups: 1) grammatical transformation; 2) lexico-grammatical transformation; 3) transliteration; 4) transcription.
