Essay

The thesis is deals with the analysis of contemporary Spanish drama through genre and the substantiation of theoretical approaches of Ukrainian, Russian and Western schools of literary translation. A new practical model of drama translation was developed, taking into consideration its dualistic nature: stage and text orientation. The difference between text for reading and script, colloquial and stage speech is being analyzed in the thesis with a particular emphasis on the notions drama, drama translation and colloquial language. One specific feature of drama is stage orientation which stems from its pragmatic intentionality: a written text, serving as a basis for stage, has another nature compared to the written text. Bearing in mind that both texts are indivisible, the written text is the main subject of this research. Drama translation can't be considered as a mere translation of the text, and thus should be viewed with due consideration of all existing codes of performance: paralinguistic, kinetic and proxemic. This is because the major target of drama is that it should be performed and functioning within the immediate context of performance - without stage directions and editorial commentary. Drama translation requires application of both meta-text-to-be-translation and source-text-to-be-translation strategies of translation, taking into account the genre-stylistic features of this kind of texts and their pragmatics. Source-text-to-be-translation strategy of drama is used to maintain the author's style and ethnocultural components.
