Essay

A research conducted within the thesis concentrates on the major theoretical grounds of the notion of film translation. First of all, it reviews the genesis of film translation through theatrical translation, and perhaps the biggest attention has been given to lip-sync in dubbing in Ukrainian, being the most understudied aspect of film translation in Ukraine. The definitions observed within this thesis explain that lip-sync may be described as "matching pre-recorded soundtrack to the animated character newly created", "the replacement of the original speech by a voice track which attempts to follow as closely as possible the timing, phrasing and lip-movements of the original dialogue", "harmony between visible articulation of the cues and hearable sounds", "replacement of the words that do not fall together with the lip movements of the actors on the screen, by other words that fall together with the lip movements". Also annunciated here is the author's own definition of the phenomenon of lip-sync: it shall be the type of film translation ensuring the fullest possible synchronicity between the sounds uttered and the concomitant lip movements of an actor on the screen with the sounds uttered and the concomitant lip movements of a dubber - thus bringing the actors on the screen closer to the audience of the country where the film is demonstrated, through an impression as if both an actor and a viewer speak the same language.
