Kotenko V. Lingual and Pragmatic Peculiarities of the Spanish Sports Discourse.

The thesis deals with the problem of the phenomenon of the modern Spanish sports discourse represented by newspaper texts and books on the artistic journalism through the mechanisms of pragmatics, syntax, and semantics. Significance of the sports culture in the Spanish society determines a broad range of texts dedicated to the description and analysis of sports events. Discourse is studied as an entity, which is clearly marked by the sociocultural peculiarities. Spanish sports discourse is defined as an open communicative multifaceted entity, based on coverage and interpretation of sports events, constructed by all actors related to sports, remains in constant dialogue with other discourses and sociocultural peculiarities of the society, and is clearly marked by subjectivity and expressiveness as the main criteria of its investigation. Spanish sports discourse is based on the categories of classical aesthetics and philosophy: beauty, heroic, and tragic. It was analysed according to how the concepts of the game, agon (competition), arete (spectacular game), hubris (overconfidence) and narcissism in the negative connotation that are part of these categories are transformed in the contemporary sports texts together with the pragmatic role they accomplish.
