The object of the research – family of the parish priest in Kharkiv diocese in the XIX – early XX century. The purpose of research: basing on modern methods of historical researches, to characterize family life of clergy and to investigate structure, social status, budget, matrimonial attitudes, behavior strategy of family of the parish priest in Kharkiv diocese in the XIX – early XX century. The methods: historical-genetic, historical-typological. Scientific novelty: the dissertation presents a study of the structure, budget and marriage strategies of the parish priest’s family in Kharkiv diocese in the XIX – early XX century; the paper presents a reconstructed system of social relations between the priest’s family, congregation, church and civil authorities in the provincial society of the Russian Empire; the author considers the accordance of the official legal status of the clergy’s family to its real social status; the sources of income and expenses in the parish priest’s family have been analyzed; the thesis studies basic aspects of leisure and deviant behavior of the priest’s family members; the paper identifies the influence of social modernization processes in the Russian Empire in the late XIX century on the parish clergy’s family as the smallest structural unit of society; it has been proved that reforms in the Russian Empire, which were to improve the state of the clergy did not fulfill their goal, however, violated existing social ties and did not affect the changes in the family life strategies of Orthodox priests. Practical value of research: the materials of research can be used for creation of generalizing works on a history of Ukraine, Ukrainian territories in structure of the Russian empire, history of Orthodox church on the Ukrainian territories; during preparation of the manuals, study and methodical complexes on a history of family and social history for higher educational institutions.
