This thesis suggests a complex approach to reproducing the idiolect of characters in the translation of animated films; defines the notion of idiolect; described the process of stereotyping the speech patterns of characters in Amercian animated films; develops a comprehensive procedure of identifying and analyzing idiolect characteristics of speech in animated films, taking into consideration particularities of the audiovisual translation; specifies idiolects with dominant regional, sociolect and national characteristics; systematizes translation strategies of reproducing characters' idiolect; identifies the main difficulties in reproducing characters' idiolect in the translation of animated films; traces and compares use of translation strategies when reproducing characters' idiolect in animated films translation in Ukraine, Germany and Spain. It is claimed that the target audience of the audiovisual products is heterogeneous by nature which means that the treatment of the language is also heterogeneous and should be appropriate for the age and status of the intended audience. The language means of the audiovisual products can vary according to the genre. The task of a translator is to determine the genre and its main features to be reproduced in the translation. Characters represent the nucleus of the most genres of cinematographical products. The creators of animated films "colour" the characters with different kinds of dialects, accents and slang to make them brighter, funnier and closer to ordinary people. It has been proved that they do not represent perfect language standards but due to their language deviations grab attention of the target audience. It should be pointed out that even choice of dialects or accents is not random. They are based on social stereotypes which are deeply-rooted in people's mind. Thus, reproducing such stereotypical speech patterns is of paramount importance as they help audience identify the character faster and easier.
