Essay

This thesis highlights the main difficulties, translation strategies and tactics in reproducing the English-language representations of the American South concept sphere in Ukrainian literary translation. Ethno-specific fragments of conceptual picture of the world which reflect mental and cultural uniqueness of a nation are available for readers of other languages and cultures via translations. It is assumed that the two languages, as well as the two cultures, which have both universal and ethno-specific character, are in close interaction in the process of translation. Particular conditions of existence of a certain ethnos form some specific conceptions that determine the basis of the national conceptual picture of the world and the national lingual picture of the world. The success of translators as mediators between two cultures largely depends on their knowledge and understanding of the national identity and cultural experience realized in language; comprehension of implicitly expressed meanings known to all members of cultural community and artistic cultural values; as well as on the ability to choose adequate linguistic means to reproduce the information encoded in text. Key words: American South, concept sphere, ethno-culturally marked concept, interdisciplinary, kernel and peripheral element, strategies and tactics.
