Matter: the educational process in boarding schools of Ukraine in the first half of the twentieth century; Aim: to systematize the theoretical ideas and summarize the experience of social and educational activities in boarding institutions of the first half of the twentieth century for use in modern educational practice in Ukraine; Methods: general (analysis of scientific sources and archival documents, synthesis, generalization and systematization of the collected material), historical (comparative and historical, structural and systematic, retrospective, updating method), chronological, comparative analysis; Novelty: for the first time a complete analysis of the theory and practice of socio-educational activity of boarding schools of the first half of the twentieth century is made; stages of formation and development of social and educational activity of boarding schools of the first half of the twentieth century are justified; the content, forms and methods of social and educational activity of residential institutions in studied period are characterized; the prospects of their use in the process of further reform, improvement and optimization of social and educational activities in boarding schools in modern conditions are outlined; The meaning of "socio-educational activity", "social education", "socio-educational environment" and "social and educational activities"; further development of the classification of boarding institutions for orphans of the first half of the twentieth century are revealed; the results can be used by researchers in the field of the history of social pedagogy, for the development of modern models of social education of orphans and children deprived of parental care in boarding schools; the research materials will be useful in the preparation of monographs, textbooks, teaching materials on the history of pedagogy, social pedagogy, history of social pedagogy; field: social pedagogy.
