The thesis focuses on revealing the main features of rendering Shakespeare's wordplay in the Ukrainian translations, the key methods and individual translators' approaches. The research covers a range of issues which include Shakespeare's wordplay, its key functions, main divergent and convergent features of wordplay basis in English and Ukrainian, reception of the comedy "The Taming of the Shrew", tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" and historical chronicle "Henry IV" in Ukrainian literature, wordplay in manuscript and edited by I. Franko translations of P. Kulish's "Pryborkana hostrukha" and "Romeo ta Dzhulieta". Key words: horizontal/vertical wordplay, humorous/non-humorous wordplay, rendering Shakespeare's wordplay, Shakespeare's wordplay, wordplay functions, wordplay lexical and semantic structure.
