Litviniak O. Contribution of Professor Yuriy Oleksiyovych Zhluktenko to the Development of Translation Studies and Contrastive Linguistics in Ukraine.

This dissertation is the first in Ukrainian Translation Studies comprehensive research of scholarly views of Professor Yuriy O. Zhluktenko, as well as his practical approaches to translation of humanitarian literature and belles-lettres. His ideas concerning Translation Studies were elicited from his articles and thoroughly analyzed. An attempt at comparing the ideas of Yuriy O. Zhluktenko with those of other scholars (mainly his contemporaries) was made. Special attention was paid to Professor's translation activity. Particularly, his translation of U. Weinreich's Languages in Contact into the Russian language was subject to analysis with special stress on this translation being a humanitarian one. The research grounds innovativeness of the researcher, which manifested itself primarily in Contrastive Linguistics, where he was the initiator of the development of this research field in Ukraine. Chapter 1 "Scholarly and biographical context of Yuriy O. Zhluktenko's research activity. Methodological principles of his legacy in Translation Studies and Contrastive Linguistics" highlights methodological principles of research, interconnection of Translation Studies and Contrastive Linguistics, presents a comprehensive description of scholarly and translation achievements of Yuriy O. Zhluktenko. The second chapter "The role of Yuriy O. Zhluktenko in the development of Ukrainian Contrastive Linguistics" characterizes the researcher's views on Contrastive Linguistics as a theoretical and applied branch of research. Consideration of Yuriy O. Zhluktenko's works on Contrastive Linguistics from the point of view of the dichotomy theoretical contrastive studies (which are subdivided into general and specific) vs. applied contrastive studies (also subdivided into general and specific), suggested by the Polish scholar J. Fisiak, allows for classification of Yu. Zhluktenko's research as belonging to the former category. Specific theoretical research borders on applied research. Not only does it compare two languages on different levels, but also suggests practical application of the theoretical material. To this category, we refer Yu. Zhluktenko's book Comparative Grammar of English and Ukrainian (1960), and chapters "Numeral" and "Complex sentence" in the book Comparative Research into Grammar of the English, Ukrainian, and Russian Languages (1981). General theoretical research of Professor Yu. Zhluktenko is represented by a number of articles published in scholarly journals and collective monographs.
