Essay

The thesis deals with the investigation of contemporary French women's prose peculiarities and their Ukrainian translations taking into consideration gender marked elements. The research consists of an introduction, four chapters, conclusion, a list of references and four appendices. Chapter I overviews theoretical works treating gender as a multivariable phenomenon in translation studies, sociology, literature, psychology, cognitive science, discourse analysis, cultural studies, stylistics, text linguistics. This approach has allowed considering the peculiarities of Ukrainian translations of the French women's prose through the interaction of different contexts - linguistic, cultural and historical, social and political, literary, which influenced the choice of translation methods and the degree of faithfulness to the author's plan. The combination of the achievements in descriptive, interpretive and gender-oriented translation theories enables to apply gender asymmetry as manipulation, deforming strategies and tactics of translation. The role of ideological factors, including censorship and self-censorship was also under consideration. For the first time in Ukrainian translation studies the attention was drawn to the urgent need to include a parameter of gender adequacy into the criteria of translation quality evaluation and its realization as a compulsory component of professional competence of translator. Chapter II provides an in-depth analysis of problems of cultural, historical and political contexts of the French women's literature and its Ukrainian translations. The overview of French women's prose was done in historical perspective. The thematic and genre typology of contemporary French female prose was also presented. For the first time the history of Ukrainian translations of contemporary French writers was analyzed, its periods were offered, the dependence of gender markedness of the original and its translation on the author's gender bias and the translator's attention to this was highlighted. In this section of the thesis the texts of G. Sand "Le ch?ne parlant" (trans. by O. Krivinyuk and O. Fedorova), "P?ch? de monsieur Antoine" (trans. by F. Yatsiana) and S. Colette "R?verie de nouvel an" (trans. by M. Rudnytskyi) were introduced into the scientific circulation for the first time. These translations were made in Galicia, Ukraine in the first post-revolutionary years, in 1920-s. The chapter also contains the discussion of dominant strategies and major difficulties translators experience in rendering G. Sand and S. Colette's novels in the target language. Special emphasis is given to the publications in the journal Vsesvit.
