Essay

The thesis applies the tools of the Conceptual Integration Theory to describe conceptual structures and cognitive operations which underpin a communicatively successful translation of L. Carroll's word play. The thesis gives a definition of the word play phenomenon viewed from a cognitive perspective; differentiates the intertextual-precedent and nonsense aspects of L. Carroll's word play as a constitutive feature of his idiostyle and translation priority; reveals the cognitive basis of communicatively successful translations of the intertextual-precedent (allusions, parodies) and nonsense constituents of L. Carroll's word play (lexical, grammatical, referential, stylistic nonsense (pun), ontological nonsense (absurd)); throws light on the cognitive grounds of rendering the humorous effect of L. Carroll's word play in translation. It also accounts for cognitive underpinning ensuring multiplicity of interpretations of translations of L. Carroll's word play. Keywords: cognitive semiosis, conceptual integration, idiostyle, intertextuality, nonsense, precedentiality, translation.
