Kukarina A. Translation of Abbreviations in English and Ukrainian Medical Discourse

This dissertation highlights the typical problems, issues, strategies and key means of abbreviation translation in English and Ukrainian medical discourse. The research deals with the main approaches to the methods of structural, semantic and pragmatic types of abbreviation translation. The attention in the research work is also focused on the problem of abbreviation translation of different pragmatic lexemes and syntaxemes: mnemonics, jargonisms, holophrases, etc. In the thesis it is outlined the problem of synonymy, antonymy and polysemy of these issues. Translation means for abbreviation are used accordingly: for English medical abbreviations: 1) transcoding - 32%; 2) cluster translation - 25%; 3) borrowing - 23%; 4) dictionary equivalent - 9%; 5) descriptive translation (explication) - 9%; 6) creation of a new abbreviation - 2%. The Ukrainian language abbreviations are translated by: 1) dictionary equivalent - 45%; 2) descriptive translation (explication) - 25%; 3) transcoding - 23%; 4) borrowing - 6%; 5) creation of a new abbreviation - 1%; 6) cluster translation - 0%, as cluster translation formulas are used only in English.
