Essay

In the given thesis the analysis of Ukrainian and foreign researchers devoted to the poetic text phonostylistics has been presented. The main characteristics of sound organization in a poetic work have been determined and researched. They are: rhyme, rhythm, intonation and other phonetic devices. The problem of sound symbolism has been closely examined. The problem of translation techniques preserving the phonostylistics of the original has been researched. E. A. Poe’s poetic works have been systematized according to the periods of the author’s work. On the basis of E. A. Poe’s most popular poems dominant features of the author’s individual style have been detected. The main phonostylistic devices have been analyzed. In the course of comparative analysis of poems’ different versions the process of professional perfection has been followed, it resulted in a more precise sound expression of thought, selective choice of phonetic devices. Main phonostylistic devices of the poem “The Raven” have been detected. They are: rhyme, rhythm, intonation, refrain, sound symbolism. In the course of translations’ comparative analysis of the poem “The Raven” and its Ukrainian, Russian, German variants the techniques rendering phonostylistic devices have been revealed. In the course of comparative analysis individual styles of all translators have been described. The algorithm of translator’s work with poems rich in phonostylistic devices has been proposed. The methodology estimating the quality of phonostylistic devices being rendered in translation has been worked out.
