Essay

The object of the research is the idiolect of Roma Franko – the English language translator of Ukrainian prose fiction. The subject of the research is stylometric indicators of separate parameters of style semantic parameters in Ukrainian short prose texts, written on the verge of the 19th-20th centuries and translated into English by Roma Franko. The aim of the research deals with revealing of properties of Roma Franko’s idiolect by means of contrasting quantitative parameters of her English translation texts style with those of the source texts of Ukrainian prose fiction written at the verge of the 19th-20th centuries. The major scientific methods are contextual and linguistic-cultural analyses, simultaneous contrasting, quantitative methods. The system of applied methods includes the general research and special philological ones. The research novelty of the thesis consists in the following being executed for the first time: Roma Franko’s translations have been given general overview of; essential features of Roma Franko’s idiolect have been defined; the formalized approach to stylometric research of Roma Franko’s translation texts has been applied; the usage of the terms of interglossality and interglosseme has been substantiated. Theoretical significance of the paper contributes to comparative studies, to literary translation theory, contrastive lexicology, stylistics and lexicography. Practical significance of the paper consists in probable applying of theoretical points and practical results of the research in training philologists for teaching certain academic courses, conducting students’ research papers writing, compiling textbooks and reference manuals for higher school students, as well as active translators and interpreters.
