Halian O. The Formation and Functioning of Physics Terms in the French Language.

This thesis is focused on the study of the lexico-semantic characteristics and the functioning of physics terms in French-language physics texts. The author reviews the main stages of the formation of scientific vocabulary, outlines the general theoretical provisions of terminology, and defines the conceptual apparatus and methods for the study of physics terminological system. The author further analyzes the processes of suffixal and prefixal derivation of terms and singles out productive affixal groups taking into account their semantic features. Special attention is paid to the processes of composition and formation of compound physics terms which increase the semantic density of resulting compounds. The author has found that part of neologisms in French physics terminology are the results of blending, a method of word formation that remains little studied. The role of "linguistic economy" in lexicalizing heterogeneous terms and telescopes as a new way of word formation in the physical terminology system was analyzed.
