In the course of research, a large number of sources, particularly reading sets were studied and analyzed making it possible to reveal the educational potential and predominant role of reading textbooks in elementary school, to formulate the author's definition of "the educational orientation of elementary school reading sets" as a system of various intrinsically interconnected educational components (national, patriotic, spiritual, moral, ethical, aesthetic, ecological, etc.), which contribute to junior schoolchildren's personality formation. The contents of elementary school reading sets were diverse and multi-genre.
