Essay

The thesis focuses on a study of the derivation process of lexical word-forming family with animal and plant nominations based on eight lexemes taken from the Bible. The basic principle of grouping the linguistic material of the Italian language – the principle of research of lexical word-forming family – has been demonstrated. The characteristic features of the word-formation system, common to different languages, including Italian were revealed. Due to the study of lexical word-forming family, the ways of new words’ formation have been traced. The hierarchical construction of lexical word-forming family has been demonstrated. The key word from which new lexemes are formed is essential in such a construction. It is proved that the lexical word-forming family is inconstant unit of word-formation, which has the characteristic feature to change in time, that is why synchronic and diachronic aspects of word-formation were accounted while studying the lexical word-forming family. The basic concepts of cognitive linguistics and the effectiveness of their application to the analysis of word-formation units in the Italian language were examined and characterized.
