Essay

The thesis is covering the research of the reproduction of the cognitive and pragmatic aspects of the individualized characters' speech in Johann Wolfgang Goethe's tragedy «Faust» in Ukrainian (by I. Franko, D. Zahul, M. Ulezko and M. Lukash) and Anglophone (by A. Swanwick, Ch. Brooks, B. Taylor, G. Priest and A. Klein) translations. This research is based on the methodology of reproduction of the characters’ individualized speech by the means of the target languages. The paper substantiates the methods of studying the language personality in Translation Studies on the cognitive and pragmatic levels. The basis of the model of the language personality is a set of communicatively meaningful characteristics that define a person as a representative of a particular civilization, an ethnic group, a social group, and as an individual. It is even more important for the language personality of the artistic work character, which is a model language personality, because the modelled world of the artistic work only reflects the properties of the real world. The analysis of the speech of such a language personality provides the researcher with the opportunity to take into account both external and internal, dialogical and monologue utterances, as well as certain features of the individual verbal behaviour of the character.
