Essay

This dissertation is a systematic study of the collective portrait of Ukrainian army officer of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, the Ukrainian State and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic in 1917–1921 period. This dissertation views an officer as a human person with his professional and private problems, his experiences and everyday practices. The study highlights the features of the appearance of the Ukrainian officer corps from the former Russian and Austro-Hungarian Army and the peculiarities of its development in Ukrainian armies during the period of revolutionary events of 1917–1921. In the work also has been analyzed the individual features that were inherent to the officer and complemented his psychological, moral and emotional image. The distinctness of the officer's public and political moods during the revolutions, wars, changes of power, the imagination of the war, his personal attitude to it, the perception of herself in wars against the enemies of the UPR/WUPR and the place of Ukraine in these wars have been identified. The paper explore the family origin of the officer, the degree and conditions of education in educational institutions and his life fate after the defeat of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921 in the USSR or in exile. The work traces the images of Ukrainian officers through the lens of personal, visual sources and literature. In the context of military and political events, the place of Ukrainian officers in the national-democratic movement was traced and their choices and behavioural strategies were analyzed. This dissertation proves that officers of Ukrainian armies formed a separate social integrity, combined with a common identity. They played significant role in the revival of the state and the Ukrainian nation at the beginning of the XX century.
