Essay

The thesis sets out to highlight ways of rendering into Ukrainian the verbal means of expressing incongruity as a cognitive mechanism for the comic creation in the English anecdotes by identifying the ethno-cultural peculiarities of the conceptual picture of the world and the structural and systemic specificity of the English linguistic world-image verbalized in English anecdotes, and by systematizing the translation transformations while rendering English anecdotes into the Ukrainian language. Systematization of domestic and foreign researchers’ experience in the field of philosophy, linguistics, literature, and linguistics showed that the theory of the comic evolved from understanding the comic as highlighting the viciousness of “the worst people” to perceiving the comic as an aesthetic phenomenon that can cause implicit or explicit reaction in the form of laughter. Any linguistic means of creating the comic become effective only if the addressee recognizes the comic intention of the speaker and reacts accordingly. The dissertation claims that the comic texts are interpreted in the person’s consciousness, and the cognitive mechanism of the comic is incongruity understood as nonconformity to the norm, embodied in the comic text and leading to creating a comic effect as a result of the addressee’s reaction to an unexpected nonconformity of the communicative situation, including the reference situation reflected in the statement, to the established norms. In accordance with the norms violated, ontological, logical and notional, and valorative types of incongruity are distinguished.
