Essay

The work describes the stages of formation and development of the drama theater in China, which are conveniently classified into the following periods: the period of the spoken drama formation in China, "The May 4th Movement", the stagnation period, the period of the Sino-Japanese War, the early years of the People's Republic of China, the period of the Cultural Revolution, the post-Mao period. The study points out that the occurrence of a new theatrical form, the Chinese spoken drama, in the early 20th century was the result of a process of establishing a qualitatively new cultural dialogue between the West and the East. It is specified that the main differences between the Western and Chinese traditional theatrical art consist in different ways of understanding such basic elements of the theater as actor, dramaturgy, artistic value and artistic purpose of the theater, functioning and status of the scenic art in general.
