The role, place, typology and iconography of woman's portraits in traditional ink wash painting, their conditionality by existing social hierarchy are determined in the thesis; the dependence of depictive canon of a woman from a certain age, the role of the first Europeans in the 18th century in approving woman's typical forms of Chinese art with European cultural code, creation of a new national type of Chinese woman's portrait are shown; formation character of a woman's portrait in the 20th century is defined. It was created by borrowing certain genres and analogues of European school of oil painting to bold interpretations of established themes of European art and interaction of ink wash painting and western overseas painting; the periodization of development stages of a woman's portrait in the 20th century connected with changes in political system of China and related art processes was established; it is shown that woman's images become the main motive of creative experiments of the late 20th – early 21st centuries, and various types of femininity are presented by means of these experiments, thematic and formal-artistic tasks are solved, the image of a woman is transformed from declaration of the ideal of beauty to postmodern games, when it becomes a means of expression of other ideas and concepts.
