Essay

The thesis is a holistic historical and pedagogical study of the problem of development of non-state higher school in Ukraine in the late XIX – early XX century. The historiographical base of the research is characterized. It is proved that the problem is little studied in historical and pedagogical explorations, as most of the explorations are biased or devoted to a rather narrow issue. A definition of the key concept of the study “non-state higher school” is given. The classification of the source base of the research into the following groups is offered: normative-legal documents of the researched period; internal documentation of non-state higher schools; sources of personal origin; reference and statistical materials; photo materials illustrating development of non-state higher school. Factors (socio-political, normative-legal, economic, socio-cultural, educational, scientific, mental) are outlined and periodization of the development of non-state higher education in Ukraine in the late XIX – early XX century (I – initial approbation (1876–1905) – emergence of the first universities initiated by private and public initiative; II – stabilization and development (1905–1917) – active development of the non-state sector of higher education; III – innovation and transformation (1917–1920 – improving the organization of the pedagogical process in non-state higher schools). The subjects and directions of realization of public and private initiative in the organization and structural development of the non-state higher school of Ukraine in the studied period are determined. Content and procedural (combination of fundamentalization and specialization of educational content, strengthening the practical expediency of the pedagogical process, development of individual learning trajectory of students; preference for creative and productive forms and methods of teaching, creation of original educational and scientific products; combination of course and subject system, increase in the share of independent work of students) and personnel (practice of careful selection of candidates, persistent improvement of scientific, cultural and professional-pedagogical level) features of the development of private higher education in Ukraine in the late XIX – early XX century are revealed. The peculiarities of the development of non-state higher school in modern conditions are found out and the possibilities of using the revealed positive experience are actualized.
