Essay

Object: Peculiarities of sunflower breeding for resistance to sulfonylurea herbicides, with high yields and product quality. Objective: Theoretical justification and practical application of methods for creating and selecting initial material for the breeding of sulfonylurea herbicide-resistant F1 sunflower hybrids. Methods: General scientific, field, special, laboratory, mathematical-statistical. Novelty consists in solving an important scientific problem of sunflower resistance to sulfonylurea herbicides and differs from previously known results by development of selection methods to increase it via breeding justification of methods for creating and selecting initial material, self-pollinated sunflower lines, and their use in producing F1 sunflower hybrids. For the first time in Ukraine, a scale and a method for quantitative assessment of sulfonylurea herbicide phytotoxicity on sunflower were developed. The methodical basics of creating initial material that combines resistance to sulfonylurea herbicides with other valuable features were rationalized. The seed production algorithm for lines - parents of sulfonylurea herbicide - resistant F1 sunflower hybrids was improved. The issues of inheritance of tribenuron-methyl resistance and of expression levels of economic characteristics in segregating generations of sunflower were further developed. Results: Based on the studies conducted in 2012-2019, a line - pollen fertility restorer, Kh 201 V, and F1 hybrids, Fenomen and Ravelin, were created. Sunflower populations combining resistance to tribenuron-methyl, high resistance to downy mildew, high content of oleic acid in oil, and early ripening were created. The scale for quantitative assessment of sulfonylurea herbicide phytotoxicity in the field was developed. Degree of Implementation: The produced hybrids have been introduced into the agricultural production of Ukraine. In 2019 at the Plant Production Institute named after VYa Yuriev of NAAS, seeds of Ravelin and Fenomen hybrids in sufficient amounts for commercial cultivation of sunflower on the area of 3,000 hectares have been harvested from 7 hectares and 5 hectares, respectively. The created populations have been introduced in breeding and research programs of the Plant Production Institute named after VYa Yuriev of NAAS of Ukraine, Institute of Oil Crops of NAAS, and Institute of Agriculture of the Northeast of NAAS. Three copyright certificates for the sunflower line and hybrids have been received. Scope of Implementation: scientific institutions of NAAS, NAS and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, educational establishments, agrarian enterprises of Ukraine
