Essay

The research offers insight into understanding how frames and their particular features can be used to convey the meaning of Japanese onomatopoeia in the Ukrainian-English translation process. Based on the present scientific and practical researches of the novel by Haruki Murakami ねじまき鳥クロニクル («Хроніка заводного птаха», «Wind-up Bird Chronicles») and its translations by I. Dziub and J. Rubin, there have been counted the frequency of use along with clarification of the semantic and stylistic peculiarities of onomatopoeia. According to the traditional Japanese onomatopoeia classification by A. Matsumura, there have been selected the most frequently used mimetic units in Murakami’s novel to analyze translation techniques they undergo in the English and Ukrainian variants with further assessment of the translator’s choice.
