Essay

The object of the research: Orthodox colleges of Ukraine, which existed from late 17th till early 19th centuries. The dissertation purpose – the characteristics of an Orthodox college as a type of education institution, detection of the place and role of Orthodox colleges in the processes that took place in education and culture of Eastern Europe in the 17th – 18th centuries. Methods: comparative studies, prosopography, historical-genetical, historical-typological. Scientific novelty of the dissertation: in the dissertation the research of Orthodox colleges as a type of academic institutions is carried out, the place and role of Orthodox colleges in the processes that took place in education and culture of Eastern Europe of the 17th and 18th centuries is determined; it is shown that the model of Orthodox College was formed under the influence of all-European processes, which took place in culture and education in early modern times; Orthodox colleges belonged to the type of humanistic schools and were established under the influence of Jesuit colleges, through the agency of Kiev-Mohyla Academy; in the research the stages in the evolution of educational model as well as organizational principles and content of educational and training process are identified; the collective portrait of students and teachers, the relationships of colleges with local community are analyzed; the signs of cultural amalgam of Eastern and Western traditions are shown; it is concluded that the Orthodox colleges personified South-Eastern vector of the advancement of European pre-classical University. Practical value: the results of the dissertation can be used for creation of generalized paper in the history of Ukraine, history of culture and education. Sphere of use: higher education institutions.
