Object: development of pedagogical thought and school education in Ukraine in XX century; purpose: to determine the content, directions, and peculiarities of the usage of theater art as a means of personality formation in the history of pedagogical thought and school of Ukraine in XX century; methods: hypothetico-deductive, comparative-historical, chronological method of theoretical generalizations; novelty: the usage of theater as a means of personality formation in the context of pedagogical thought and school of Ukraine in XX century is systematically analyzed; periods of the development of the theory and practice are grounded, tendencies of the usage of the means of theater art in educational institutions are determined; the patterns and dynamics of the development of pedagogic thought in terms of the usage of theater art as a means of personality formation in Ukraine in XX century are defined; the theoretical and methodological approaches of scientists, educators, theater figures to the efficient usage of theater art in the process of personality formation are summarized; results: organizational and methodical approaches to the usage of theater art as a means of identity formation are updated; scientific field – general pedagogy and history of pedagogy
