This thesis focuses on phonographic and ideographic analyses of evolution of the French alphabet signs in the 9th – early 21st centuries’ writing. The research outlines main areas of sign studies in semiotics, traces the development of writing and elaborates a comprehensive methodology to tackle the phenomenon under consideration. Graphic and orthographic development of the French language has been analyzed through its phonographic and ideographic features in different historical periods. Symbolical connotations of the French alphabet characters have been elucidated. The research determines central signs and notions that comprise the figurative and conceptual system of French initials, along with philosophical and symbolic aspects of the French alphabet.
