Shabliy E. Theoretical Bases and Methodology of German-Ukrainian Legal Translation.

The thesis investigates procedures, methods and functions of legal translation as an integral part of legal practices in modern legal cultures of Germany and Ukraine and offers a partial special theory of German-Ukrainian legal translation, based on a culturally-hermeneutic approach to it. As research materials served the source and target texts of the valid and historical law acts and legal literature, monolingual law texts, legal lexicographical and other reference sources of Germany and Ukraine. In the thesis were considered: a system of background knowledge, necessary to execute a proper legal translation with regard to its functions in the legal host system; a translation analysis of typical German and Ukrainian legal source and target texts in the legislative, judicial, administrative and scientific legal genres; the basic terminological problems of German-Ukrainian legal translation and the appropriate lexical and grammatical transformations to achieve the approximate functional equivalence, as well as general methods to achieve adequacy of legal translation.
