Essay

The thesis is the first comprehensive study and attempt to reinterpretation of Polish prose of mid-nineteenth century, which appeared in the Ukraine and in Galicia, as a phenomenon of cultural Polish-Ukrainian border. In the works of P. Bykowski, M. Grabowski, J. Zahariasiewicz, brothers Lozinski, Z. Milkowski (T.-T. Jez), A. Marcinkowski, P. Swiecicki, Z. Fisz (T. Padalica), M. Czajkowski, as well as J. Kraszewski described mytho-historical, ethno-regional and axiological concepts which is constructed a unique artistic world of borderland metatext. The analysis involved authors prose achievements, especially understudied in the history of Polish literature, some of the texts which is entered in the Ukrainian scientific discourse fo the first time. The works of mentioned writers considered in categories of literary borderland in terms of postcolonial criticism. Informed in the thesis concept of "borderland" correlates with advanced in the Polish literary term "Kresy". Analyzed literary texts, of course, written in the paradigm of "kresowa" literature (B. Hadaczek, J. Kolbuszewski, S. Uliasz), but has never been an integral part of discourse of Kresy that barely touched the nineteenth century, as it was primarily concerned with the literature of the twentieth century.This is a serious omission, because they talk about emotional experiences the need for constantly approval their own existence in the boundary area, the threat of loss of national identity due to the domination of "their" territory alien imperial power and at the same time the manifestation of any (liberation, national) movements of the Ukrainian people; danger of forgetting Polish noble tradition, ignoring the traditional gentry values, fear of change patriarchal system, the growing of the consciousness of the Ukrainian people, who were given no chance for self-development.
