Borchuk S. Ukrainian encyclopedic tradition of the twentieth century: designs, participants, research prospects.

The thesis analyzes the prehistory of encyclopedic domestic affairs, and made a special emphasis on coverage of national encyclopedic tradition in cases of specific projects, their initiators and leading executors. Prospects of research on this subject are also described here. We consider the following encyclopaedic projects: the four-volume «Ukrainian people in the past and present» (1909–1916); projects UAS – AUAS 1920s – early 1930s. «Biographical Dictionary of statesman of Ukraine» and «Encyclopedic Dictionary»; three-volume «General Ukrainian Encyclopedia» (1930–1935); three attempts of preparation and publication of «Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopedia» (failures 1927–1934 and 1944–1947 and finally successful - 1957–1965 ). The analyzed socio-political context and ideological motivation and adequacy to challenges of time of the first encyclopedia of local history USSR – «History of the towns and villages of the Ukrainian SSR» in 26 volumes – and the first Republican historical encyclopedia – the four-volume «Soviet Encyclopedia of History of Ukraine».
