Essay

The thesis focuses on the processes of language innovation characteristic of the modern French language, with special emphasis put on neologization. These processes are striking instances which prove the dynamic nature of the language and illustrate the absolute progress related to the realization of word-formative capabilities of the language system. An actual tendency of the period under study is the phenomenon of abbreviation, acronymization, contamination, which is a powerful source of vocabulary acquisition on the modern stage of the French language development. This phenomenon reflects the changes taking place in the consciousness caused by the intensification of information stream resulting from the increasing pace of life. The analysis of the role and functioning of affixation in the process of neologization enables the understanding of specific language resources intensification. Nowadays, French on-line media are dominated by the tendency towards suffixal word-formation of nouns-agentives on the basis of proper names (mainly family names) and names of organizations and abbreviations (mainly acronyms (suf. -iste, -eur)). In the context of innovation processes the nouns created by means of adding the suffix -itude stand out especially in the texts focused on politics. Some years ago this suffix was not so productive but today it is active owing to its intensive use by media resources. The intensification of modern word formation processes is distinguished by the increasing role of prefixes, in particular, noun prefixes. In the range of prefixes hyper- is of special importance because its meaning is closer to that of the prefix super-, but the productivity of hyper- is the highest in terminology. Moreover, it is possible to trace new capacities of the prefix hyper- which is especially spread in the French language for creating new words on the basis of knowledge that is received in the sphere of the Internet and new technologies.
