Essay

The thesis presents a comprehensive theory of sociocultural correlation between the translator's personality and evolution of Ukrainian-German literary translation in the last 170 years. The history of Ukrainian-German literary translation is analyzed from the standpoint of its being a representation of Ukrainian culture in the German-speaking cultural space. The concept of the Ukrainian-German translation field is introduced to denote a socio-cultural space at the intersection of the respective literary polysystems. The thesis discusses the four stages in the field's development that differ in the functions of translators and conditions of their activity and also reveals the process of translation canon formation. The study highlights the role of the translator's personality in the history of Ukrainian-German literary relations and the creation of the image of Ukraine and its literature in German-speaking countries.
