Object - childhood as a phenomenon in scientific thought of the 20th century; the aim - to promote the use of creative findings of the past in modern educational practice for preservation of childhood specifics on the basis of study of the theoretical-pedagogical ideas of childhood and generalization of experience of their implementation; methods - general scientific, historical-genetic, historical-structural, comparative, praximetric, problem-oriented, axiological, prognostic, terminological analysis of special literature; novelty - the research is the first to investigate integrally the development of the ideas of childhood during the period under research on the basis of the scientific approaches, taking into account social-pedagogical, ideological and pedagogical determinants; historiography of the problem of childhood investigation has been outlined and the directions of study of the ideas of childhood have been distinguished; the researched period scientists' contribution to the development of the problem of childhood has been systematized; the stages and leading tendencies of development of the problem of childhood in Ukrainian pedagogical thought in the 20th century have been scientifically grounded; the experience in realization of the ideas of childhood has been generalized; the perspectives of implementation of the general practice experience in the sphere of realizing the ideas of childhood in the researched period into modern educational practice have been outlined; the archival materials which have not been studied before are offered for scientific analysis (159); the main definitions of the investigated problem ("person", "child", "childhood") have been specified; the ideas on genesis of formation of views on childhood and attitude to children have acquired further investigation; results - the materials of the dissertation provide a new scientific interpretation of the theoretical-pedagogical ideas of childhood and experience in realizing them in the 20th century and promote the use of creative findings of the past in modern educational practice for preservation of childhood specifics. The course "The Problem of Childhood: History and Modernity" developed by the author of the research has been implemented in the educational process; field - pedagogy.
