Essay

The research substantiates the role of strategy as a cognitive regulator of translation discourse through the prism of the interactional translation model. The solution to the scientific problem is seen in developing a model of translation as a non-linear integrative discursive process aimed at recreating the cognitive structures of the original on the basis of the target language worldview. The dissertation approaches translation as interaction between the author, the translator and the reader. The research is based on the view of the language use as a joint action embedded within broader social activities, as interaction to coordinate joint activities with the central focus on the key concepts such as ‘coordination problem’, ‘convention’ and ‘common ground’. Applied to translation, interactional approach implies a different degree of translator’s involvement in the cross-cultural communication between the author and the reader / hearer of the text. Assuming that communication is not a transmission of messages but joint activity aimed at coordination between the participants within a broader social context, the role of translator can no longer be viewed as that of transcoder or transmitter of messages. The translator is, firstly, a participant of two acts of communication: author – translator and translator – reader / hearer, and secondly, an organizer of a simulation communication act between the author and the reader, due to which the latter has the impression of communicating with the author directly. Each of these acts of communication comprises joint action, collaboration between the participants in creating the concept of the communicated message. Interactional approach to communication presupposes that the sense of the communicated message is not a permanent entity delivered by the speaker to the recipient, but is a jointly constructed ideal structure which appears only in the interaction of an individual with another individual, being in its nature intersubjective and activity-based.
