Essay

The dissertation presents a holistic retrospective analysis of the theoretical foundations and practices of the development of higher medical education in Ukraine during the XX – beginning of the XXI century. On the basis of historical and pedagogical sources research, the degree of scientific development of the problem has been revealed, the stages of formation and development of higher medical educational institutions of Ukraine have been described, the contribution of domestic scientists within the period outlined in the dissertation to the problem investigation has been systematized. The stages of evolutionary changes in the system of higher medical education of the period of the XXth – the beginning of the XXI century have been scientifically grounded: I stage – the birth (the opening of the first educational institutions on the border of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries); ІІ stage – formation and expansion of the network of higher and secondary medical establishments (the first half of the XX century); ІІІ stage – improvement of content, organizational forms, methods and means of training in higher medical educational institutions (II half of the XX century); ІV stage – modernization of higher medical education at the turn of the ХХ – the beginning of XXI century. The experience of functioning of higher medical educational institutions in Ukraine (medical faculties, classical universities, medical universities, institutes, academies and colleges) has been generalized; organizational forms, methods, technologies and means of training have been described, the teaching staff and the students contingent of medical educational institutions have been characterized according to the selected stages of their development, the ways to increase the effectiveness of future health professionals training have been outlined.
