The paper investigates the problem of the formation and development of the light industry industries in the Ukrainian provinces of the Russian Empire in the second half of the XIX-th – early XX-th centuries and their influence on the socio-economic situation of the Over Dnieper Ukraine is disclosed. The sources on this issue are analyzed and systematized. A general picture of the state of the light industry sectors is presented. It is noted that their development depended on the import of equipment, raw materials and materials. The process of transition of the light industry from manufactory to factory production is highlighted. The questions of the technical condition of light industry are considered, the features of providing machines and equipment of enterprises are highlighted and characterized. It was proved that the light industry, which in the pre-reform period went out with its products to the external market, began to decline during the period of industrial capitalism, or to develop very slowly, working on a narrow domestic market. The purpose of the study is to study the role of the light industry in the economy in the Over Dnieper Ukraine, on the basis of the study of various sources and achievements of historiography, and to reveal the process of formation of market relations and industrial capital on the example of the branches of the light industry in the second half of the XIX-th – early XX-th centuries. The object of the study is the socio-economic processes in the light industry in the Ukrainian provinces of the Russian Empire in the second half of the XIX-th– early XX-th centuries. The subject of the study is the formation and development of such light industry sectors in the Over Dnieper Ukraine as textile, wool, cable, leather, footwear, fur, that are closely related to agriculture, engineering and chemical industries. The practical significance of the results obtained is that the materials of the dissertation, its conclusions and recommendations can be used in the preparation of general works on the history of Ukraine, Russia and Poland of the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, special courses on the problems of the history of economics. The conclusions drawn on the basis of the collected material may contribute to the expansion of the source base in the study of this topic at the regional level, and it will be appropriate to apply it for the preparation of educational, methodological, historical, ethnographic and popular works and in practical teaching activities, training for the economy. The study of the problem of the development of light industry in the Ukrainian provinces of the Russian Empire in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. is carried out on the basis of the use of the systematic approach, by means of an organic combination of the principles of historicity, multidimensionality, scientific, objectivity and comprehensiveness commonly accepted in modern Ukrainian historical science. Construction of the presentation of the research material is enclosed by problem-chronological and thematic principles with the application of the principles of systemicity, consistency, continuity. The methodological and theoretical basis of the work were the approaches and methods adopted in historical science. The choice of methods was determined by the subject of the study, the purpose and scope of the above tasks.
