Essay

Object: the process of social education of juvenile offenders in Ukraine in the XX - early XXI century. The purpose of the study is to systematically reveal the genesis of theoretical ideas and scientific generalization of models of juvenile offenders’ social education in Ukraine in the 20th – early 21st centuries as a complex socio-pedagogical phenomenon for the sake of representation in contemporary scientific and pedagogical discourse. Methodological approaches: systematic, chronological, historical and logical, cultural, political, anthropological, paradigmatic, synergistic, person-activity, hermeneutic, narrative, cross-sector. The system of research methods contains: theoretical analysis, synthesis, abstraction, concretization, periodization, generalization, historical-logical, historical-structural, comparative and historical, modeling method. Scientific novelty of the obtained results: three pedagogical models of social and educational work with juvenile offenders in Ukraine 1917 – 2015 (pragmatic model of juvenile offenders’ social education (1917 – 1938), the basis of which was recognized juvenile offenders’ vocational education and training: socio-metric model of juvenile offenders’ social education (1939 – 1990), the basis of which was the education of juvenile offenders as active members of the collective, society; humanist model of juvenile offenders’ social education (1991 – 2015), which proclaimed a person-centered approach to juvenile offenders’ social education) have been identified and characterized). The content of the concepts: „social education”, „socialization”, „offense”, „juvenile offender”, „deviant behavior”, „delinquent behavior”, „prevention”, „social rehabilitation”, „re-socialization”, „social adaptation”, „social support”, „social patronage”, „probation”; social, social-pedagogical and individual-psychological determinants of juvenile offenders’ behavior; contribution of domestic and foreign educators to the development of theory and practice of juvenile offenders’ social education in Ukraine in 1917 – 2015 was partucularized. Further development: generalization and typology of specialized penitentiary institutions for juvenile offenders operating in Ukraine during the study period (receivers, distributors, isolators, craft and correctional shelters, children's correctional and labor colonies, correctional schools, factory schools, factory schools , vocational schools of social rehabilitation); analysis and systematization of the source base of the research; generalization of normative-legal bases of social education and criminal responsibility of juvenile offenders in the studied period. There were introduced into scientific circulation: little-known and previously unknown archival sources (61 items), scientific documents, historical and pedagogical literature; previously unknown historical facts related to the history of social education of juvenile offenders in Ukraine in the XX - early XXI century. The practical significance of the study is that the factual material, theoretical backgrounds and conclusions of the study can be applied to the educational process of higher education institutions; also while designing academic disciplines such as „Pedagogy”, „History of Pedagogy”, „Methods of educational work”, „Social pedagogy”, „Social work”, „History of Social work”, „Sociology of Deviant Behavior”, „Socio-pedagogical Prevention of Offenses”, „Socio-pedagogical work with different client groups”, etc.; also in career development system of teachers, social workers, specialists of the Department of Juvenile Services and other specialists whose professional activity is connected with the correction of unlawful behavior of minors; also while designing textbooks, training and teaching aids.
