Essay

This dissertation seeks to explore psycholinguistic regularities of translating literary texts. The object of the research is literary translation, the subject matter – psycholinguistic regularities in the translation of literary texts. The research aims to establish psycholinguistic regularities of English-Ukrainian literary translation as compared to the source texts, i.e. S-regularities, and psycholinguistic regularities of literary translation on the basis of comparing Ukrainian translations with non-translations in this target language, i.e. T-regularities. Among the main scientific methods employed are projective instruments of psycholinguistic analysis, introspective, correlational, linear regression analyses. Academic novelty of the research is determined by the fact that the author has founded a new direction in Ukrainian linguistics – psycholinguistic corpus-based translation studies. The theoretical significance lies in the elaboration of a theoretically and methodologically reasonable psycholinguistic approach towards the translation regularities discovered in the English-Ukrainian parallel corpus of literary texts and the Ukrainian comparable corpus of literary texts. The major results of the research contribute to the general theory of translation, literary translation theory, psycholinguistics of translation, machine and computer-aided translation, editing and modeling of translation of natural languages. The practical value of the research lies in the Ukrainian translation of the LIWC2015 computerized programme dictionary and its possible use by Ukrainian linguists. The main research findings can be applied in the lecture courses in theory and methods of translation from English, literary translation, specialized courses in translating and editing of literary translation, psycholinguistic problems of translating, applied translation studies, designing new machine translation and computer-aided translation systems.
